Everyone wants to be a success but not many put in the effort required. Preparation is a key part of success and there are a few things you should do even before starting your job search.
According to Dale Carnegie, the two most important decisions in life are, who you choose as a spouse and what do you do for a living. Today we attempt to tackle the latter.
Selecting a job can be tedious and frustrating. With so many portals out there, it is easy to get confused. Focus and clarity is very important when selecting a job.
1. Know where you want to be in 5, 10, 15, 20 years
This a hard but important part of the selection process. With the exception of a few, many of us do not know the answer to this and it’s okay.
Keep asking yourself this question, everyday. Keep a journal and find out what you like and dislike. Keep asking yourself what makes you tick.
Over time, you will find the answer. Keep writing, and never stop, even if you think you’re done. Your plans will change over time and that is perfectly fine.
It is important that you do not skip this. Not knowing what you want is sure way to being unmotivated in your new job and the whole painful process will repeat.
2. No compromise check list
To narrow your search, list down items that you would not compromise on. It will help you sort through the clutter when you start searching.
Some examples are listed below.
i) Distance – Travel time, telecommuting etc.
ii) Field of work – related working experience, area of expertise, education etc.
iii) Expected salary range
3. Look out for options immediately available to you
Sometimes, what you’re looking for is right in front you.
Once you have an idea of what you want to do, start listing the people in your network that can help get you to where you want to be. Speaking to these people will help you channel your energies in the right areas and get where you want to be, faster.
If you know of no such people, then write to successful people in your desired industry. People are generally willing to share if you show an interest in them.
